What does it mean that “our modern world has lost its story,” and why does that matter?
Our minds are designed to "complete the story" when we have partial information about any situation. In a conversation, if I leave off any detail, your mind will make assumptions and complete the story within you. You may not share it. This detail is provided by God in His Book. When we ignore the detail (the story) our minds by nature look for something to fill that gap with. Apart from Bible and the Church, the only information available out there is that provided by the evil one. That is usually filled with entertainment, sports, alcohol, money, sex, drugs, etc. Now recently legalizing many things can be added to this list. We deceive ourselves saying that we are happy because we don't allow our brains to stop and feel itself. A lot can be written on this subject. Let us see what others in the group think.
I don’t think I really have anything to add to that right now. I was a bit curious about the statement “the world has lost it’s story”. Here I tend to distinguish between that of the world and that of God (Mt. 4:9, Eph. 6:12). In that sense I think the “world’s story” (it’s story) is seeking to supplant God’s story by the many mal-desired things you point out, Deacon. I believe the evil one is following his same tired (but still unfortunately effective) playbook he began in the first garden (“Did God really say that”?) which ultimately was thearted by the “proto evangelium”, bringing about His story.
