Consistent throughout salvation history are covenants. How does entering into a covenant “define the relationship” between God and His people?

Contrasting a covenant with a contract may make it clear.  A contract is an agreement to provide a service in exchange for a payment.  But a covenant is a relationship.  In Old Testament, result of breaking a covenant is death.  That is why back then covenants were made by splitting animals into halves and while standing on the blood.  It is like saying, if I break the covenant my body will become like this animal.  I am eager to see other view points.
