He is very right.  Unexamined life run on the surface.  slightest wind will blow away the happiness.  Examined life make corrections and happiness is deep.  The turbulence on the surface doesn't touch the depth.

We all live our lives.  Some, however, reach perfection.  How? I think these people have the skill of self-examining.  This helps make corrections.  This helps polishing to achieve perfection.  Once we die, our souls are going to live forever.  What will we be doing? Jesus said, "the least in the kingdom of Heaven is greater than he".  What could He have meant by that?  If I go to Heaven is my soul equal to Mother Theresa? Mother Mary?  May be, but hard to believe.  God is just.  Will this just God make me equal to those saints?  I believe that there is a hierarchy in Heavenly Kingdom too like we have on earth.
