By chapter 20, forty years have passed and the children of Israel are back at They complain about the lack of water. Moses is instructed to speak to the rock before their eyes, but he takes his staff and strikes the rock twice. Consequently, he and Aaron are prohibited from leading the children of Israel into the Promised Land. Does this seem like a harsh punishment? Why do you suppose they received such discipline?
