Despite what they know of God and have been promised, Israel fails to trust in God. As a consequence, Israel will wander a year in the desert for each day they spent spying out the land. What does this setback in Israel’s story tell you about the nature of sin and its punishment? Is there a correlation?

To whom more is given, more is expected.  Israelites have seen God's miracles.  God expected them to trust Him more.  In my understanding the "nature of sin" is the depth and intensity of sin.  The same sin committed by two people under different circumstances can have different consequences.
